I don’t like tomatoes, except in sauce or falling apart baked in something but I do LOVE fried green tomatoes. Yes it took me a while to work up the courage to try them out but I am so glad that I finally did. The flavor is it’s own thing. It’s own amazingly delicious thing!
The first year I grew tomatoes they were like pretty flowers yum yeah crazy I know. Now I do two things with them. Make marinara (I’ll share the recipe when I make my first batch this year) and make friend green tomatoes.
- Green Tomatoes
- Milk
- Lemon Juice
- Flour
- Garlic Salt
- Pepper
- Italian Seasoning
- Eggs
- Panko Bread Crumbs
Note: I’ve made these for vegan friends by skipping the milk step and using Ener-G for the egg step.
First make fake buttermilk by adding some lemon juice to milk. You just want enough milk to dip your tomatoes in. Next slice your tomatoes in 1/4 inch slices. In a plastic bag add enough flour to coat all your tomatoes, garlic salt, pepper and Italian seasoning to taste (I do a couple of good shakes of each). Then dip the tomatoes in the milk. Then drop in the flour bag and shake and let sit for a couple seconds. I do this step in batches. Then dip the floured slices in a whipped up egg and then in Panko bread crumbs. I like to flip the slices, press down and flip a couple times so I know they are well coated. Finally fry in hot oil until golden brown.
Serve with your favorite cream based sauce. I love this with traditional ranch, fiesta ranch and dill party mix. So so good.

Oh, so yum! Thanks for adding in the vegan mod! Us weirdos really appreciate the kind nod like that. :) A fantastic vegan ranch can be made with cashews or vegenaise to complement the yummy tomatoes.

I’m like you and don’t like to eat just plain red raw tomatoes, but I love friend green tomatoes! You got all fancy using panko bread crumbs! Maybe I’ll try that some time. I simply just wash the green tomato, slice it, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and dredge through flour that has a touch of corn meal. Fry those up and eat ‘um with ranch dressing! Oh, man, now I’m hungry!
