The attack occurred at the homestead of the late former Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were in Kachien Village, Central Kasipul Ward. Among the injured was Daniel Muhuhi, the DCI Officer in Charge of Rachuonyo South Sub-County.
The police operation began after receiving intelligence that the suspects were hiding in Kosele Trading Centre. Upon noticing the police presence, the suspects fled to the late MP's homestead. Officers pursued and initially arrested five suspects.
But here's where the situation escalated: a crowd of over 100 youths stormed the compound, locking the main gate and creating a tense standoff. The officers fired warning shots, but the crowd retaliated with stones and crude weapons, overpowering them. The five arrested suspects managed to escape during the chaos, with one fleeing while still handcuffed.
The injured officers received treatment at Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital. Meanwhile, a major manhunt has been launched for the escaped suspects and those believed to have incited the mob. Police are also appealing to the suspect who fled with a handcuff to surrender it.
This incident is particularly sensitive given the upcoming Kasipul parliamentary by-election. The two slain youths were killed last week during clashes between rival groups at a rally in Oyugis. Police investigations into both the murders and the attack on officers are ongoing.
