How long does it take to get a death certificate from the funeral home in Missouri? ›

Death certificates can take 6-8 weeks to complete. Please contact your funeral home for updates. When a family makes funeral arrangements, the funeral home will ask how many copies of the death certificate the family needs. The funeral home will then provide that number of death certificates to the family.

Once a funeral home has picked up the body and brought it to their facility, they will then clean and dress and/or shroud the body. Afterward, the body will be placed in refrigeration to keep it cool until the day of burial, at which point the body will be transported to the burial site.

Having the funeral home owner or an employee live on-site reduces the chances that someone will break into the funeral home to steal chemicals. There's also the chance that vandals could break in and do damage to the funeral home's interior.

Immediate certified photocopies of the original death certificate are available to the funeral homes. The record is checked, logged, and sent to the Missouri Department of Health, Bureau of Vital Records. After the State places the record in its system, the local health department can issue copies.
